Teaching, Learning and Curriculum

At Orchard Community Trust (OCT), our vision is clear: Working together, we enable everyone to flourish through high-quality education. We are guided by our values of Courage, Unity, and Equity and our motto Flourish Together.

We are committed to ensuring that every child, regardless of background or ability, receives the very best education and support to reach their full potential. Our schools create calm, safe and inclusive learning environments where pupils are encouraged to explore, investigate and develop independence. With significant proportions of disadvantaged pupils, pupils with special educational needs and high mobility, we recognise that every child deserves exceptional teaching and care to flourish.

Teaching and Learning

Our Approach to High-Quality Teaching and Learning

We define the essential elements of high-quality teaching as:

  • High expectations for behaviour and clear routines
  • Excellence in instruction
  • Strong subject knowledge
  • Learning that “sticks” through effective retrieval
  • Adaptive teaching to meet diverse needs
  • Consistent, impactful assessment and feedback

These elements are underpinned by OCT’s Teaching and Learning Principles, which guide our approach across our schools. To drive continual improvement, we use StepLab alongside our principles, enabling precise, evidence-informed development of teaching practice. Regular Development Drop-Ins further support collaboration, reflection, and shared learning across the Trust.

Inclusive and Ambitious for All

Our schools are committed to inclusion and equity, recognising the unique needs and aspirations of every pupil. By providing opportunities for all pupils to make the best possible progress, we aim to help them achieve the highest personal success.

Each school within the Trust develops its own teaching, learning, behaviour, and curriculum policies tailored to its community, while aligning with OCT’s vision and priorities.

Curriculum

Our schools are dedicated to delivering a curriculum that empowers every pupil to thrive and achieve their full potential, irrespective of background. We aim to equip learners with the knowledge, skills and mindset essential for lifelong success. Our overarching vision is to nurture future citizens who possess a strong sense of identity, purpose and responsibility to flourish in an increasingly interconnected world.

Our schools are committed to providing a curriculum that prepares our pupils to thrive and flourish, regardless of their background that equips them with the skills and mindset needed for future success. Our overarching goal is to develop future citizens who have a clear sense of their potential and their place within the wider world.

At Orchard Community Trust, our curriculum is designed to be coherent, inclusive and relevant, ensuring that every pupil has equitable access to high-quality learning experiences. We provide a rich range of first-hand, practical and creative opportunities that empower pupils to make informed choices and take ownership of their learning journey. Through collaboration and independence, pupils develop the skills needed to become effective problem-solvers and critical thinkers.

Our dynamic and engaging curriculum fosters unity by encouraging pupils to communicate, explore, question, predict, explain, debate and challenge ideas together. It also nurtures courage, inspiring pupils to aspire beyond the classroom and face future challenges with confidence and resilience.

To strengthen this vision, we are implementing an ambitious digital strategy across all our schools. This initiative harnesses technology to enhance teaching and learning, ensuring equity by providing tailored solutions and support for every pupil, including those in our special schools. By developing vital digital literacy skills, we prepare pupils for success in an increasingly digital world, regardless of background or ability.

Our approach is guided by the OCT Curriculum Principles, which ensure that learning remains consistently challenging, inclusive and forward-thinking. These principles promote a shared understanding of excellence while allowing flexibility to meet the unique needs of each school community. To drive continuous improvement, we have established a Subject Peer Review system that fosters professional dialogue, collaboration and the sharing of best practice - strengthening unity among colleagues and raising standards across all subjects.

Through this curriculum, pupils gain the knowledge, skills and character to contribute meaningfully to society. We encourage them to be lifelong learners, ready to embrace opportunities and demonstrate courage in overcoming challenges. At Orchard Community Trust, we remain committed to innovation, reflection and collaboration, ensuring that every pupil has the tools to thrive both in school and beyond.

Assessment

At Orchard Community Trust, assessment is a shared priority across all our schools, ensuring consistency in how we set targets and track pupil progress. Guided by the OCT Policy for Target Setting and Pupil Progress, we take a structured and unified approach to monitoring achievement and planning for improvement. This policy ensures that targets are meaningful and tailored to individual pupils and groups, enabling teachers to plan interventions and adapt instruction effectively.

Feedback is central to this process. It is always constructive, focused on successes and next steps against clear learning objectives and success criteria. This approach helps pupils reflect on their progress, stay motivated and develop as confident, reflective learners.

Assessment is not just a snapshot of performance - it is an ongoing process that informs future learning. It helps us understand where pupils are on their learning journey and what support they need to move forward. Assessment drives target setting and shapes teaching strategies, ensuring that every pupil receives the right level of challenge and support.

To maintain consistency, all schools within the Trust use the same assessment and data tracking systems, including our two special schools. While these systems are applied differently to meet the unique needs of each setting, they provide a common framework for tracking progress and sharing best practice across the Trust.

At Orchard Community Trust, assessment is a tool for raising standards and refining teaching practice, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to Flourish Together.
