Information for Children and Families

There are times for all of us when we may benefit from a little extra support. We may be struggling with worries or need some practical advice, everyone is different.

We have a range of wellbeing support available to children and their parents and carers. The support is provided by undergraduate and postgraduate University students who are in the process of qualifying in the fields of social work, counselling and psychology. Each student has different skills and abilities and they are united by their interest and passion in supporting others. In some cases, support is also available from a qualified and experienced practitioner.

How we support children and their families

  • Wellbeing group work for children building confidence, developing social skills, providing support and the opportunity to talk about any worries.
  • 1:1 support for children supporting a range of needs and issues by providing a safe place to talk. Sessions can be interactive and creative, and all depend on what works best for the child.
  • Confidential counselling for children where children are aged 11+ this may be provided by a student. For children who are younger or have more complex needs, this is provided by a qualified and experienced practitioner. Counselling provides a safe and supportive space where children can talk about any of their worries. They will be listened to without being judged and supported to make positive changes.
  • Practical support and guidance for parents and carers around housing, finances and other practical matters. We are not experts in these things, but we can listen, guide and signpost you to the right service.
  • Confidential counselling for parents and carers as well as adult children.
  • Support to families where there are challenges at home in some cases families benefit from having a dedicated worker who can be a source of support and guidance. This could be around setting routines and boundaries at home or housing and money worries. There are lots of different reasons why support is needed.
